Bobby Williamson’s stay as Kenya’s Harambee Stars head coach today came to an end with the unveiling of a new technical bench by the new Football Kenya Federation (FKF) at a hotel in Nairobi.
Immediate former Mathare United Coach Stanley Okumbi was handed the mantle as the head tactician of the national team; he will be deputized by Musa Otieno and Gor Mahia’s assistant Coach Frank Ouna, who will also double up as the Team Manager.
Michael Igendia was appointed the performance analyst with Mike Kamure landed the logistics specialist job. Two consultants; a psychologist and a nutritionist will also join the new look technical bench.
Speaking during the state of Kenyan Football briefing, FKF supremo, Nick Mwendwa urged Kenyans to give the youthful team time to execute their mandate. He also clarified that Williamson was not fired, but asked to step aside so that his contract can be settled.
“I’m asking Kenyans that we invest in youthful coaches, the next generation of coaches. The concept is to have a team effort to put together the tools and machinery required to drive the team. Having coaches alone in today’s environment will not work,” Mwendwa said.
“We are not replacing Williamson, we ask him to step a side to allow time to settle the contract, in our own view, the contact is expensive.”
The cash strapped FA is reported to be in debt to the tune of Kshs. 172M, inclusive of Kshs. 30M owed to the Scotsman.
Kenya’s main agenda now is the AFCON 2017 qualifiers which continues in March, with a trip to Equatorial Guinea.
