Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has confirmed that his current contract only runs until June next year, and is unsure if he will be in charge of the side at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, if the Super Eagles qualify.
The German tactician says he is committed to his role and wants to achieve ”big things” with Nigeria, but at this stage he does not know if he will still be with the side in Cameroon.
“I have a lot I want to achieve. Big things with Nigeria,” Rohr told the BBC. “I can see what the future can produce. I hope I can work with [Nigeria Football Federation] President [ to achieve those things. But I don’t know my situation after June 2020. We have to see what happens.
“As is known, my current contract with the Super Eagles runs till June 2020. This ends right in the middle of the qualifying campaign for the 2021 Afcon. It’s a bit strange that I have a contract ending while I have to qualify for the 2021 Afcon in Cameroon.”
Nigeria have been pooled with Benin, Sierra Leone and Lesotho in their Afcon qualification Group L, which should provide a simple top two finish that would take them to Cameroon.
Perhaps of greater interest for the Super Eagles fans is the fact that Nigeria will begin their big to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in March next year.
Rohr guided Nigeria to third place at the recent Afcon in Egypt.
