Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Lesotho in the matchday one of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Thursday.
The game played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo saw Lesotho take the lead 10 minutes into the second half through Motlomelo Mkwanazi.
Semi Ajayi then scored an equaliser about seven minutes after the hour mark to give the home fans some hope.
The West Brom centre-back powerfully headed in Kelechi Iheanacho’s corner to level.
Both sides then sought for a winner late on to no avail, as they settled for the draw in the end, having one point each in Group C.
Nigeria despite controlling possession failed to create any clear cut goal scoring chances against Lesotho in the game.
Iheanacho saw a free-kick saved, Taiwo Awoniyi failed to capitalise on a promising cut-back and Ademola Lookman had a low shot across goal turned away.
The Super Eagles will take on Zimbabwe next.
Africa has a guaranteed nine qualifiers for the 2026 finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States, with all group winners booking a spot at the tournament.
