Nigerian Professional League side Dolphins FC has been granted the go ahead by the LMC to change its name to Rivers United FC ahead of the seasons kick off this weekend.
The leagues management Council approved the request by Dolphin FC to change the name following an application by the Rivers State government through their sports commission. The club owned by the state government will henceforth be named Rivers United FC.
In a letter addressed to the club by the LMC
‘”Pursuant to the provisions of
article A5.4 of the Framework and
Rules of the Nigeria Professional
Football League, having duly
considered your application for
permission to change the name of
the Football Club from “Dolphins
Football Club” to “Rivers United
Football Club”, we are pleased to
convey to you the approval of the
League Management Company”.
dolphin reached the finals of the CAF Confederations Cup in 2005 losing to Moroccan side FAR Rabat in the finals. They got relegated in 2007 but bounced back in 2009.
The club boasts of three league titles 1997,2004 and 2011.they play their home matches at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt.
