“No one expected us to qualify – but this is just the start” – Rosella Ayane reflects on Morocco’s World Cup performance

Morocco forward Rosella Ayane hopes the Atlas Lionesses can continue to inspire young girls after strong performance in the FIFA Women’s World Cup

The Tottenham Hotspur forward came on as a second half substitute as her side were beaten 4-0 by France in the Round of 16.

Speaking to soka25east immediately after the match, the 27-year-old reflected on a historic campaign.

“Everyone had the belief that we could progress to the next round, obviously so it’s disappointing,” said Ayane.

“I think when we sit back and reflect, we will be able to be super proud of ourselves. The journey that we have been on is incredible and amazing, and I don’t think anyone expected us to be here which is the best part.”

The important takeaway of the tournament for Ayane was the opportunity to create a legacy as a team young people in Morocco could look up to.

“This is just the foundation for us as a team, for football in Morocco, for women. It’s just a start, but for me I think it’s a win if we inspire young girls in Morocco to want to play football so. Even if we’ve inspired just one young girl, that’s a win for me.”

Ayane then picked her best highlight from her time in Australia with the team.

“Qualifying out of the group has to be my favourite moment. No one expected us to do it. For me, my friends, and my family, it was amazing.”

Ayane and Morocco’s focus will now turn to qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, starting with a match away to Namibia on October 23.
