Uganda Cranes striker Emmanuel Okwi will miss the team’s return leg against Mauritania on August 3 in the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
“We have released Okwi from camp because of a troublesome groin injury,” head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has confirmed on Monday.
The Young Africans striker was a second half substitute in the Cranes’ 2-0 win over Mauritania in the first leg clash played at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
In the absence of Okwi, the team’s technical wing has recalled former St George striker Robert Ssentongo and Kenyan Premier League leading scorer Dan Sserunkuma to beef-up the attacking department.
Sserunkuma arrived in the country today Monday morning together with fellow Kenyan based pros, Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito, Godfrey ‘Jaja Walu’ Walusimbi and Khalid Aucho who also returns after serving his one game suspension.
The quartet straight away joined the others in the camp at Njeru Technical Centre in Eastern Uganda.
The team is currently staying at Jinja Nile resort hotel as they train at Njeru Technical center, on artificial turf to get acclimatized to the same conditions of the pitch in Mauritania at the Olympic stadium.
The Cranes need a win, draw or a 1-0 loss to qualify for the group stage. The team that qualifies will join Togo, Guinea and the Black Stars of Ghana in the group.
Players in Camp:
Benjamin Ochan, Robert Odongkara, Denis Iguma, Nicholas Wadada, Denis Okot, Savio Kabugo, Richard Kassaga, Andrew Mwesigwa, Isaac Isinde, Kyambadde, Farouq Miya, Brian Majwega, Godffrey Walusimbi, Geoffrey Kizito, Robert Ssentongo, Brian Umony, Hamis Kizza, Khalid Aucho and Dan Sserunkuma.
