Sunday Oliseh has hit back at Fortuna Sittard over his suspension saying the Dutch club took the decision because he refused to participate in “illegal activities.”
The second division side’s board announced the move to put the former Nigeria’s Super Eagles coach on “non-active” duties today over “unacceptable actions” by the African legend.
“Several attempts by the club to encourage a change in the coach’s behavior have unfortunately not worked, resulting in an unworkable situation.
“The board of Fortuna Sittard emphasizes that the decision to suspend Sunday Oliseh is not motivated by the current sporting performance.
“The coach’s unacceptable actions have made cooperation between many people within the organization impossible – from players to employees,” the club’s statement states.
But, Oliseh, 43, has come out to give his side of the story in a tweet that has been widely shared.
“I confirm: Due to my refusal to participate in illegal activities at Fortuna Sittard and violate the law, I have been suspended from my duties as coach by the foreign owners of Furtuna.
“Unfortunate for the lovely fans, my players and our hard fought phenomenal positioning for promotion,” the tweet reads.
It remains unclear what illegalities the club wanted him to get involved in.
Oliseh was appointed as Fortuna’s coach late 2016 and managed to steer them clear of relegation as they finished 17th in the 20-team league.
The team is currently second in the league – five points behind leaders NEC.
