Little known Ahmad Ahmad sent shock waves across the footballing world by defeating long serving Issa Hayatou at the 39th extraordinary congress held on Thursday 16th March 2017, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ahmad’s victory is viewed by many as a fresh start for African Football signaling an end to what was alleged to be a corrupt riddled 29 year old reign.
However, credit must go to Hayatou and his executive for bringing African Football this far.
One of the major highlights in Hayatou’s reign was the successful hosting of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Hayatou was implicated in a scandal regarding the awarding of TV rights of the tournament, of course which he denied.
However, this is not time for a witch hunt and politicking but rather a time for unity of purpose.
In view of this, What will Ahmad bring to the table?
First and foremost, Ahmad must focus his energy on developing the game rather than fighting battles with his predecessor.
Secondly, accountability, transparency and integrity is what we demand. A lot is expected of the new President and we will be there to give checks and balances. Finances must be used wisely and for the sole benefit of the game.
Thirdly, let him not underestimate the power of the media who are equal partners in the game as well. Dialogue is key and the CAF executive must continue to engage the media in all activities it undertakes.
Football Associations across the continent have made a choice and now have a great opportunity to put aside their differences and forge a single agenda going forward.
Ahmad needs to mend fences with his rivals. Elections have gone and it is time to work.
It is also a chance for member associations to present new ideas on how the game will be developed.
Africa must strengthen ties with FIFA, lobby for more funding and campaign for more spots at the proposed 48 team World Cup.
Ahmad’s rise to the CAF presidency should be viewed as fresh start for African Football and we will all be patiently waiting to see what he brings to the table.
