Nigeria international Victor Osimhen has revealed why he struggled while at German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg.
The 21-year-old forward was signed by Wolfsburg after he won the Golden Boot and Silver Ball awards having helped Nigeria clinch the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
However, Osimhen made only 12 appearances in the Bundesliga for the Wolves, but he didn’t score a single goal.
The Ultimate Strikers Academy product has reflected on his time with Wolfsburg, who he did not give him the needed support.
“The weather, the language, the food [affected me]. It was my first time in Europe,” Osimhen told Sport1.
“I was just 18-years-old and I didn’t have enough time to acclimatize. They didn’t believe in me very much.”
Osimhen was loaned out to Belgian club Sporting Charleroi where he scored 20 goals in 36 competitive games during the 2018/19 campaign.
The lethal marksman was then the rewarded with a permanent deal, but he was later signed by former French champions Lille OSC ahead of the 2019/20 season.
“I think that the love and acceptance that I experienced in Charleroi helped me a lot,” he added.
“I had just come out of a difficult situation and my self-confidence was at its lowest point.”
Osimhen also excelled at Lille where he netted 18 goals in 38 competitive matches and he has since been snapped up by former Italian champions SCC Napoli ahead of the 2020/21 season.
He has netted four goals in nine international matches for Nigeria’s senior national team.
