Zimbabwe football association boss Dr. Philip Chiyangwa has been elected the new president of COSAFA unopposed.
Chiyangwa, believed to be a member of the “Abuja group” who are driving a pro-change agenda in the African game’s administration takes over from Patel Suketu from Seychelles.
South Africa’s Danny Jordaan and Suketu had indicated they would contest for the presidency but they later withdrew giving Chiyangwa an easy ride.
The Zimbabwean business mogul is also seen as close to FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, who some quarters have indicated was supporting his candidature.
The biggest test for the pro-change movement however, comes March 2017 when they will front a candidate for the CAF presidency against veteran Issa Hayatou of Cameroon.
Already Madagascar’s federation honcho Ahmand is touted as their candidate for the top CAF job.
