Senegalese police on Monday began investigations into circumstances that led to the death of fans at the Demba Diop Stadium during a Senegal’s League Cup final between US Ouakam and Stade de Mbour on Saturday evening.
At least eight people died and more than 50 were injured after a stadium wall collapse and stampede at the match.
This was after fighting broke out between rival fans of both clubs US Ouakam and Stade de Mbour, and the wall collapsed as police also fired tear gas
Dakar Police boss Serigne Bossirou Gueye announced in a press conference yesterday that the investigations have commenced and the perpetrators would be brought into justice.
“Violence of every kind was committed. Traces of blood and other debris at the site testify to the atrocities committed,”said Gueye.
The Senegalese Football Federation announced earlier on Monday the suspension of US Ouakam from the national sporting body, citing “the loss of lives and serious injuries” at the Demba Diop stadium in Dakar.
The federation’s discipline committee would meet soon to decide on sanctions against US Ouakam, it said.
However, police have defended their behaviour among the confusion, as tear gas was fired and officers were accused of retreating from a neutral zone between fans when the violence began.
