Cameroon will get their 2022 FIFA World Cup journey underway when they face Switzerland on Thursday at the Al Janoub Stadium. The Indomitable Lions are placed in Group G alongside the Swiss, Brazil and Serbia.
Coach Rigobert Song will go in search of a first World Cup triumph in two decades which would boost their chances of avoiding an early exit for the first time since 1990.
This will be the first meeting between Cameroon and Switzerland in all competitions.
Players to Watch
Cameroon
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting shared the team lead with three goals in six World Cup qualifying matches and scored in Cameroon’s 1-1 draw against Panama in a friendly. He will be one of the players to watch in this well drilled Cameroon side. The 33-year-old forward is having a solid season for Bayern Munich of the German Bundesliga, scoring six goals in 10 games. Fellow forward Karl Toko Ekambi also scored three times during qualifying play. The 30-year-old has scored in two of his last three outings for Cameroon.
Switzerland
Murat Yakin’s men know that the importance of a victory in Al Wakrah on matchday one cannot be overemphasized.
Breel Embolo was a big contributor during qualifying, tallying in back-to-back 2-1 victories over Spain and the Czech Republic. The 25-year-old forward led Switzerland with three goals and added three assists in only four World Cup qualifying matches.
