Nigeria and Cameroon will this Saturday 6 July 2019, lock horns in a round of 16 clash of Total Africa Cup of Nations at the Alexandria Stadium.
The Super Eagles and the Indomitable Lions both had a turbulent experience in the group phase. Even though Nigeria won two of their three group matches they weren’t convincing. The Super Eagles managed only two goals across the group phase. Two narrow 1-0 victories against Burundi and Guinea. Then followed a 2-0 loss against Madagascar.
Cameroon registered only one win and that was against Guinea-Bissau followed by two goalless draws against two draws against Ghana and Benin.
Both teams finished second in the group but it’s Super Eagles who have a slight edge over the Indomitable Lions.
Head to Head
Saturday’s encounter will be sixth meeting between Nigeria and
Cameroon. Nigeria have won the three of the previous five matches while Cameroon’s last victory was in 2000 Afcon final in Lagos via penalties. The only draw between them was during the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying game in Yaounde, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Statistically speaking, Nigeria have an edge over The Indomitable Lions.
Key Players
Gernot Rohr will most likely reinstate Daniel Akpeyi back in goal in preference to Ikechukwu Ezenwa who had a nightmare against Madagascar. William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo and Omeruo Ola Aina will be key in the Nigeria defense. Ahmed Musa, Alex Iwobi and Odion Ighalo most likely to lead the attack while John Obi Mikel will play in a much deeper role to give the defenders cover. The Nigerians have to improve in their attack if they are to dispose off of Cameroon.
Equally, Cameroon’s Clarence Seedorf will need to work on his team’s finishing ability. The defending champions only scored two goals in the group stage. One goal came off defender Yaya Banana’s head while the other was Stéphane Bahoken right footed effort. Christian Bassogog is yet to register any impact on the tournament so is Clinton Njie.
