Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo will be the battle ground as Nigeria and Tunisia collide in the third and fourth playoff of the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday night.
Nigeria’s dream of a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title was ended at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday night by Algeria’s last gasp goal in a 2-1 defeat thanks to Riyad Mahrez freekick stunner.
Tunisia lost to an extra time own goal by defender Dylan Bronn handing Senegal a 1-0 victory over in the first Semifinal played at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on the same Sunday evening.
Head to Head
Nigeria and Tunisia have met 17 times with the Super Eagles recording 5 wins while the Carthage Eagles have 6 wins with 6 games drawn.
Nigeria and Tunisia have a history at the Afcon. On 11 February 2004, Tunisia won a Semifinal match 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time. On 4 February 2006 it was Nigeria who beat Tunisia 6-5 on penalties in the Quarterfinals with that match also ending 1-1 after extra time.
Key Players
Despite missing a penalty in the match against Senegal, Ferjani Sassi will be among the key players for Alain Giresse in this match. Wahbi Khazri and Naim Sliti are also expected to start. It will be interesting to see whether Giresse will pick Ben Mustapha or Mouez Hassen for a spot in between the sticks.
Gernot Rohr will have the task of making his players forget the Semifinal disappointment and psych them for a battle with the Carthage Eagles. Ahmed Musa, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi are all in line to make an appearance.
