Rwanda beat Mozambique to go second in Group F

Rwanda Amavubi went second in Group F of the Total Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021 qualifiers with a precious home 1-0 win over Mozambique, to revive their qualification hopes to next year’s continental showpiece.

Byiringiro Lague scored what proved to be Rwanda’s winner after 67 minutes at Kigali Stadium, as Amavubi claimed their group first win to raise their tally to five points, one more than their guests Mozambique and Cape Verde, and revive their hopes of sealing the group’s lone remaining ticket to the finals.

Automatically qualified as hosts Cameroon tops the group on 10 points, and faces Cape Verde on Friday in Praia.

The hosts were the better side along the 90 minutes. Their best chance of the opening half fell to Mutsinzi Ange, whose long-range shot was stopped by the visitors’ goalkeeper Julio Pedro.

Five minutes after the break, Pedro was alert again to stop skipper Haruna Niyonzima from giving the hosts a deserved lead.

But the goal came seven minutes after the hour mark when substitute Lague gave his coach Vincent Mashami something to cheer about, having recorded their first win of the qualifiers.

Rwanda faces Cameroon in the final matchday on 30 March in Douala, while Mozambique entertains Cape Verde in a simultaneous kickoff.
