Rwandan champions Rayon Sports qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup group phase for the first time in their history after knocking out Clube de Desportos da Costa do Sol of Mozambique despite losing 0-2 on Tuesday in a playoff second leg. They advanced 2-3 on aggregate after a deserved 3-0 win at home in Kigali.
Nelson Netto broke the deadlock with a sweet finish in the 34th minute to give the hosts the lead in a packed stadium.Costa do Sol continued pilling pressure as they fired from all cylinders to get their second goal via a Tisdell Terence shot at the stroke of half time.
The host side will blame themselves for failing to go through as they missed a clear penalty awarded to the them by the referee for an infringement by Rayon Sport.
The second half was a see-saw affair as both sides mounted wave after wave of attack however the visitors remained solid in defence failing to concede from the marauding Costa do Sol strikers to get the important win that propelled them to the lucrative group stage for the first time.
The draw for the group stage is set for Saturday, April 21 in Cairo.
