SDT suspends FKF decision to end KPL season

By Agnes Amondi

The Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT) has temporarily suspended the decision by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to declare Gor Mahia the 2019/20 KPL champions, which meant that the season was cancelled,

after Chemelil Sugar, who had been relegated and Kenya Premier League, moved to court to challenge the decision.

SDT Chairman John Ohaga made the ruling following an application filed by both the Kenyan Premier League body and Chemelil Sugar.

FKF president Nick Mwendwa, and general secretary Barry Otieno, are the respondents in the case.

The case is set to be heard on May 26.

This comes two weeks after Mwendwa declared Gor Mahia champions via his Twitter page, at the same time promoting Nairobi City Stars to the top tier. The FKF chief cited the coronavirus pandemic as the reason for ending the season prematurely.

However, KPL decried the move. It argued that FKF did not consult them before it made the decision.
