Senegal have achieved their best placing in the latest FIFA world rankings after securing a first World Cup ticket since 2002.
The Lions of Teranga climbed 9 places, from 32 in the rankings to 23rd making her the highest ranked African nation in the standings.They leapfrogged fellow Russia 2018 qualifiers Tunisia (27th, up 1) and Egypt (31st, down 1).
The recently concluded World Cup qualifiers clearly left its mark on the ranking, which are published monthly by world soccer’s governing body.
There have been no changes at the top as Germany, Brazil,Portugal ,Argentina and Belgium remain put in front with just a few points separating them.
Senegal booked their place in next summer’s World Cup finals by beating South Africa 2-0 in Polokwane early this month.
South Africa had originally won the match 2-1 on November 12 last year, but it was agreed that the game would be replayed after referee Joseph Lamptey’s lifetime ban was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Lamptey has been expelled by FIFA over match-fixing allegations.
