Sadio Mane believes Senegal has enough talents in the team to achieve at the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup even without him in the squad.
Mane who injured his knee playing for Bayern Munich underwent an operation last week which ultimately ruled him out of the tournament.
“Many of you sent me messages of support following my injury. Thank goodness the mid-week operation went well,” he wrote on his official Social Media account.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank you all and to express my gratitude to you.
“This Monday, our dear country will compete in the World Cup, Qatar 2022. I am sure that the Lions will transcend themselves and will approach all matches as a real final.
“I am also convinced that all Senegalese (back home) will be in front of the screen to support and encourage our valiant national team. Like all fans of the Lions, I am convinced that the teammates will fight as one man and as they used to do in order to honor our dear country.”
Head Coach Aliou Cisse said the World Cup would be poorer without Africa’s football’s star attraction.
“We’re not just talking about the Senegalese people here. I think people all over the world,” he told reporters on Sunday.
“The whole football family is saddened by what has happened because he was the second best player in the world and he represents the African continent, as well as representing Senegal.
“It’s very, very sad for him. Especially, we wish him a speedy recovery. I hope he gets back to playing football as quickly as possible.”
