Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has thrown his weight behind Morocco’s bid to host the 2026 World Cup.
Blatter, who is serving a six-year ban from soccer, tweeted on Thursday saying that the North African country which is bidding for fifth time to host the tournament would be the logical choice.
“World Cup 2026: Co-Hosting rejected by FIFA after 2002 (also applied in 2010 and 2018). And now: Morocco would be the logical host! And it is time for Africa again! ”reads the tweet.
Morocco is facing competition from North American bid of United States, Canada and Mexico with the 2026 hosts scheduled to be named at the world football governing body congress to be held in Moscow on 13th June this year.
Previously there have been join bids which did not see the light of the day one being of Tunisia which withdrew from a joint bid with Libya for the 2010 World Cup and also joint bids from Belgium/Netherlands and Portugal/Spain that failed to secure the vote for the 2018 World Cup.
All FIFA’s 211 members association will be voting with African associations expected to vote in favor of Morocco who already have shown their capability to host the first 48 teams tournament.
The last World Cup played in Africa was in 2010, when South Africa hosted the tournament, which was followed by Brazil, Russia, and Qatar.
