Sportpesa Kenyan Premier League review week 10

The league’s most expensive player Jacque Tuyisenge was on the mark as Gor Mahia dispatched old foes Sony Sugar, Western Stima stunned Bandari in Kakamega, Sofapaka ended their eight-game losing run as the match between AFC Leopards and Ulinzi Stars in Mumias ended prematurely in Saturday’s action.

League leaders Mathare were held to a 1-1 draw by Muhoroni Youth as Wycliff Ochomo flourished while Posta Rangers stung giants Tusker with a win in Sunday’s matches.

Chemelil Sugar 1-0 Ushuru (Chemelil Stadium)

Veteran striker Hilary Echesa made all the difference in this match with his goal in the 16th minute after Ushuru goalkeeper Shabaan Odhoji had exposed himself coming off his line in an attempt to clear a dangerous Samuel Olwande ball from the right wing.

Kakamega Homeboyz 2-1 Thika United (Mumias Sugar Sports Complex)

Homeboyz striker Jeremiah Wanjala scored the opener in the 12th minute following a blunder by Thika goalkeeper Hamza Muwonge.

Thika’s Ray Omondi leveled matters with a sharp right-footed shot just four minutes later.

Scorer Wanjala was rested in the second half, and his replacement Andrew Murunga scored the winning goal two minutes to the end to snap Thika’s two-match winning streak.

Gor Mahia 1-0 SonySugar (Nyayo Stadium)

The league’s most expensive player, the Sh4million Rwanda striker Jacques Tuyisenge demonstrated once again that he is worth every penny Gor spent on him with the all-important item.

Coming back from injury Tuyisenge struck late, late in the match, heading home a long ball from young defender Eric “Marcelo” Ouma for his fourth goal of the season in as many matches.

Western Stima 2-0 Bandari (Moi Stadium)

Bandari’s inconsistent start continued with this shock result.

Stima went ahead in the 17th minute from a Fredrick Nyarombo free kick awarded after he was fouled by Bandari defender David Gateri.

Club leading scorer Baron Oketch then doubled matters in the 74th minute with a brilliant strike from the left wing.

City Stars 0-1 Sofapaka (Nyayo Stadium)

After nine straight losses Sofapaka finally came through with their second win of the season.

Traditional goalkeeper Barnabas Tiema, who was fielded as a striker in this match, scored the solitary goal on 67 minute to silence the pre-match favourites.

City Stars had an excellent opportunity to equalize in the 84th minute when they won a penalty, but Ugandan striker Jimmy Bageya’s spot kick was kept out by Sofapaka goalkeeper Evariste Mutuyimana.

AFC Leopards (1-1) Ulinzi Stars (match called off ) (Mumias Sugar Sports Complex)

The match was called off in the 80th minute following crowd trouble.

Kepha Aswani had given AFC Leopards the lead in the second half via a penalty kick only for John Makwata to reply for Ulinzi, also through a penalty kick.

Ulinzi were then awarded another penalty deep into the match sparking protests that stopped play and eventually led to the match being called off.

Tusker 0-1 Posta Rangers (Nyayo Stadium)

This was the brewers’ first defeat in seven games.

Joseph Mbugi scored the solitary goal of the match in the 30th minute from a spot kick after Tusker defender Eugene Asike had brought down busy Joseph Nyaga inside the box.

Mathare United 1-1 Muhoroni Youth (Nyayo Stadium)

Muhoroni Youth threatened to disrupt Mathare United’s stay at the top of the table together with their impeccable home record by scoring early in the match.

League top scorer Wycliffe Ochomo took advantage of defensive disorganization by Mathare to slot the ball past goalkeeper Robert Mboya in the second minute for his seventh goal of the season.

Mathare however provided their appropriate response 13 minutes later when Whyvonne Isuza found the net after being put through by Crispin Oduor.
