It is a new dawn for Kenya premier league club AFC leopards following the unveiling of sportpesa as the official sponsor.
The betting firm which is as well the title sponsor for the national football league has come on board on tune of KS45million annually for the next five years.
According to Dan Mule who is one of the clubs Co-Chairmen the amount is set to increase with a 5% every year.
The club will as well benefit from bonuses if they win tournaments and the league title.
The New developments comes on the backdrop of another deal between Mathew Opwora and Betway Company being nullified by the Sports Dispute tribunal, Led by John Ohanga, as the two parties had not consulted the body that was mandated to restore sanity to the club, that was in the middle of management wrangles.
“After much scrutiny and considerations, we settled for Sportpesa because it had a better offer that would benefit the club more.We were enticed by Sportpesa’s future plans for the team.
AFC leopards is a big club and a big brand, and so we had to choose the best offer before we allowed any of the two betting companies to exploit the Ingwe brand” Said the Chairman of the Sports Dispute tribunal.
Even as this unfolds, dust is yet to settle at the leopards den, as two worrying functions one led by Dan Mule and the other by Mathew Opwora, who was conspicuously missing during the unveiling, are busy fighting for the control of the club.
It is this wrangling that saw the SDT take over, introducing an interim management board comprising of five members from each side.
New football Kenya federation President Nick Mwendwa emphasized on the need to have one management team running the affairs of the team, and has called upon the club to conduct an election as soon as possible.
“We can no longer take matter of football to the corridors of justice. The new office has the capacity to deal with all that”
Starting June this year, all players contacts and all the clubs in this country will be licensed by the federation”
“This will ensure proper management and accountability” Said Mwendwa
On Friday the 4th of March 2016, SportPesa is expected to be unveiled as the sponsor for Gor Mahia
