Kabete United 4-3 Kiambiu Youth FC
West conference Kabete United continued to flourish in the Sportpesa Super 8 Premier League as they leaped to third on the standing after escaping with a narrow 4-3 victory over visiting East conference side Kiambiu Youth FC in an explosive week six tie played on Sunday 9 April in at fully packed Kabete grounds.
First half goals from Simon Ochieng (1’ ), Paul Masiba (18’) and Simon Onyango and an 86th minute effort from James Githinji ensured Kabete’s revival under new coach Peter Opiyo continued to take shape as they stretch their winning streak to five consecutive matches this season much to the delight of their boisterous home fans.
Kamukuji based Kiambiu who put a gallant fight despite being reduced to 10 men and wasting a penalty, got their goals through dependable forward and former AFC Leopards (U20) young star Valdo Madegwa who netted a brace (6’ & 90,) and John Olando (17’).
Kabete who beat Jericho FC 2-1 last weekend haul their point tally to 12, four shy of leaders Kawangware United and tied on second placed Kayole Asubuhi after the match, a delighted coach Opiyo heaped praise on his charges but urged them to stay focus.
“It was a tough game our opponents really played well but I am glad we got the three points which is what we were aiming for. Every person in the team played his part today so team work was key you could see how the players were self-motivated from the word go and the support from fans gave them the confidence to go for it. At first the chemistry between the players was lacking but I am glad we are building on that each game at a time,” Opiyo stated after the game.
Kiambiu coach Raul Gonzales was not a happy man after the game and he blamed officiating and defensive lapses for the loss.
“We had an upper hand in the game, we did very well considering this is an away match but we slumbered a bit in the second half where the keeper lost his concentration and we were punished. I believe we were also denied a clear goal, the shot by Valdo (Madegwa) went in but the assistant referee denied us which are some of the things the league should look into going on forward. Other than that I believe we should have won the match but that is football.”
Kiambiu will be at home against Team Umeme for their next league match next weekend while Kabete United will also be away to Zamalek fc.
