St. George beat Mekelakeya 2-0 in an Ethiopian Premier League match on Monday to widen the gap at the top of the log to 4 points.
Beahilu Assefa and Mentesnot Adane scored in each half to hand the defending champions the three valuable points.
Assefa looped over advancing Mekelakeya keeper Jamal Tassew to put Kidus in the lead in the 13th minute. Baye Gezaghen should have restored parity before the interval but he was wasteful.
The second stanza was an end to end affairs but it was the home side who find the back of the net again to wrap up the game. Mentesnot doubled the lead in the 72nd minute as turned in a Ramlek Lok’s header from close range.
Adane Girma should have made it 3-0 almost immediately but his effort hits the crossbar with the rebound shot by Assefa well saved by Jamal.
Saliso Samuel’s free kick sailed marginally over the bar as the visitors failed to pull one back.
The horsemen with 29 points are now 4 points clear of second placed Dedebit.
