Mamelodi Sundowns scored a penalty at the death to overcome Chicken Inn 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night and advance into the next round of the CAF Champions League on a 2-1 aggregate.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Bulawayo two weeks ago, the South African league leaders levelled the tie on aggregate when defender Wayne Arendse scored a headed goal from a free kick in the 35th minute.
The Zimbabweans were able to hold the hosts at bay in the second half and even threatened with chances of their own, though goalkeeper Denis Onyango was in fire form.
The match appeared to be headed to penalties until the Brazilians were awarded a penalty in injury time, with Khama Billiat – who was excellent on the night – brought down in the box by his countrymen.
Veteran striker Katlego Mashego made no mistake from the spot, scoring just a few minutes after coming off the bench to make it 2-0 on the night and put Pitso Moismane’s men into the next phase of the continental competition.
Sundowns will now face Congo’s AC Leopards over two legs in the First Round, with the matches set to be played on March 11-13 and 18-20.
