SuperSport United booked their place in this year’s Caf Confederation Cup final with a 4-2 aggregate win over Club Africain on Sunday night.
Bradley Grobler scored a brace while Jeremy Brockie netted once to seal a 3-1 win over their north African opponents on the day.
The win means Matsatsantsa are the only second South African side to book their place in the Caf Confederation Cup final after Orlando Pirates, who played in a final two years ago.
This also makes Eric Tinkler the only South African-born coach to make it to the final of the Caf Confederation Cup, having achieved the same feat with Orlando Pirates in 2015.
United will now meet TP Mazembe in this year’s final, and they will fancy their chances against the Lumbumbashi-based outft.
The Tshwane giants had a dream start to the encounter in Tunis as Grobler headed them after 16 minutes. The early lead put SuperSport on the front foot and in pole position to reach to the first ever Caf Confederation Cup final.
Eric Tinkler’s team did well to contain their north African opponents throughout the first period, but the mentor would be disappointed with his team’s failure to punish the Tunis side on the night.
United doubled their lead through Jeremy Brockie eight minutes into the second half to put the game beyond Club Africain’s reach.
The goal was Brockie’s 10th in the competition, and more reasons for other PSL rivals come knocking on United’s door for his services, even though everyone knows that only Mamelodi Sundowns can afford him.
Morgan Gould, who was superb on the night, gave away a penalty which Saber Khalifa duly converted to make 2-1 on the night.
But Tinkler’s charges had other ideas as Grobler grabbed his second of the night following a Thuso Phala through ball to make 3-1 and 4-2 on aggregate.
The home side tried to launch a comeback late on, but United held on to their lead to reach their first ever Caf Confederation Cup final, and Tinkler’s second since his first whilst coaching Orlando Pirates in 2015.
