The Tanzania Football Federation(TFF) has agreed to host this year’s CECAFA club Champions also known as Kagame Cup in its commercial city of Dar es Salaam. This was revealed by the spokesman through a statement issued confirming that they are ready for the tournament and thus are waiting for the list of the participating clubs be availed by CECAFA.
Last year’s tournament was held in Rwanda where where Al Mereikh who are in the group phase of the Champions league beat APR 2-0.The 2013 edition was held in Burundi with Vital O of Burundi winning it after beating rivals APR 2-0.
The Kagame cup derived its name from Rwandese President Paul Kagame who is also the sponsor of the tournament and the first edition under his name was held in 2002 where Burundi outfits Vital ‘O’ were the champions.
The first tournament was held in 1967, though it was not official with Abaluhyia Football Club, now AFC leopards winning it, however the official tournament begun in 1974 with Simba sports club who are the most successful in this tournament winning the inaugural edition.
The last time Tanzania hosted the tournament was in 2012 where Young Africans also known as Yanga beat moneybags Azam Football Club in an all Tanzanian final by 2-0.Yanga were then the defending champions then having won the tournament a year before beating traditional rivals Simba 1-0 in the same City.
CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye speaking at the secretariat headquarters in Nairobi was a happy man saying the tournament will be much improved this year after the host agreed to support the tournament fully “All of us agreed that the host country will provide food, transport to the team and officials with all participating countries catering for the transport that will bring them” Musonye added.
Simba Sports Club are the most successful Club winning the Cup a record 6 times followed by Gor Mahia, AFC Leropards, Tusker and Yanga 5 times a piece.
Elsewhere, former Gor Mahia lethal striker Danny ‘Mzee’ Sserunkuma has left Simba Sports Club of Tanzania after the Club reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract after a 6 month stay at the Msimbazi outfit. The player agent was quoted saying “we have reached a mutual agreement with the player and Club, a player of Dan’s caliber cannot warm the bench’
The moves see Simba lose close to $30,000 Dollars approximately Tsh 50,000,000 as sign in fee from Kenyan League defending Champions Gor Mahia.Sserunkuma scored 4 goals for Simba but was unsettled in the club as he lacked enough play time.
Simba finished 3rd in the just concluded Vodacom Tanzanian League behind Champions Yanga and second placed Azam.
Sserunkuma played for Nairobi City Stars before former Gor Mahia tactician and now at AFC Leopards Dravko Logarusic brought him to Gor.it is believed its Logarusic who engineered his move to Simba.Another Kenyan at Simba is Mungai Kiongera who is at loan to KCB of Kenya.
