A toothless Zamalek side extended their winless start to their African Champions League group-stage campaign to two games after they were held to a goalless draw away to debutants Teungueth of Senegal on Tuesday.
Minnows Teungueth were more than a match to their illustrious opponents, who created a few goal-scoring chances as fatigue looked to have taken a toll following a long, delayed flight to Senegal.
Teungueth could have also snatched a stunning win when Elhadji Omar Fall blasted high over from a good scoring position eight minutes past the hour mark.
Zamalek’s second consecutive 0-0 draw, after they had also failed to break down MC Alger at home in their opening game, left them second in Group D with two points, one behind leaders Esperance, who face MC Alger (third with one point) later on Tuesday.
Teungueth bagged their first point after they lost to Tunisia’s Esperance in their opening match.
Cautious affair
The first half was a drab, cautious affair as both sides opted not to take any risks.
However, an early chance fell to Zamalek’s Tunisian right-back Hamza Mathlouthi, who ran onto a defence-splitting pass on the right hand side of the area before Teungueth keeper Baye Assane Cisse came out in a timely manner to block his angled effort.
Mathlouthi rescued Zamalek at the other end in the 26th minute, intercepting a dangerous low cross after some brilliant individual work from Baye Djiby Diop down the flank.
Both sides traded punches in a faster second half, with Fall guilty of a glaring miss following a neatly-worked counter attack.
A bouncing header from Zamalek striker Osama Faisal forced a great save from Cisse before the visitors wasted the game’s best chance deep in stoppage time.
A neat interchange released Youssef Ibrahim and he sent in a low cross to substitute Emam Ashour, whose scuffed effort came off the bar with the goal gaping.
