The final of 2015 Kenyan Premier League Top 8 Knockout Tournament Cup is going down today (Saturday 7) at Kisumu’s Moi Stadium from 3PM.
Awendo based Sony Sugar FC will be hosting invincible league champions Gor Mahia who are yet to taste defeat on home soil this year in a match of their lives as they seek to end a slow season on a high by bagging the highly coveted gong.
Sony convincingly beat Sofapaka 3-1 to reach the final on a 5-2 aggregate for the first time in their existence while K’Ogalo confirmed their dominance over giants Tusker this season, eliminating them on a 4-3 aggregate after a first leg 2-2 draw.
Christened “Brothers’ Derby” a meeting between Sony and Gor has never been brotherly despite the two tracing their roots from the same locality – even though the latter boasts a recent dominance over the former, the wins never come easy for the Frank Nuttall men, making 2-1 or 1-0 scoreline victories the most popular.
K’Ogalo has however gotten the better of the Salim Babu Coached side this season beating them by identical 1-0 scoreline in the league.
The last time they met at Nyayo Stadium,Nairobi, in October, Innocent Wafula’s goal was the difference as the three points effectively handed Gor their 15th league title with four matches to spare, and any slip up today could also see them hand the champions their third trophy of the season.
Nobody wants to lose in a final.
Babu is a confident man and he win not coil his tail on the face of the mighty Gor, promising to give as much as he receives.
“We have prepared very well and the boys are ready for the game. We want to give our best and at least get something out of this competition. This is a final and nobody wants to lose in a final,” Babu said.
“We have played them before and we know they are a good side. But we cannot sit back and defend because we will invite a lot of pressure on ourselves which can lead to mistakes. We will try and attack and see what comes out of it.” He added.
For Coach Nuttall, his will be another chance to cement his position in the annals of history of Gor Mahia as one of the most successful tacticians to ever sit on the hot seat and winning the Top 8 crown will do just that.
