Turkish Women’s Cup 2020: Starlets hoping to spring back from defeat against Ghana

By Agnes Amondi,

Kenya national women’s team Harambee Starlets tackle fellow African side the Black Queens of Ghana at the ongoing Alanya Gold City Cup on Tuesday at the Gold City Sport Complex.

Head coach David Ouma is confident that the team can seal victory after their 5-0 defeat to Chile on Saturday.

He termed the loss as a ‘setback’ and was keen to point out that they are competing at a world stage and are using it as a yard stick to gauge how far they’ve come and the far they still need to go.

The aim, he also said is to bridge the gap between themselves and their opponents.

“We are using this tournament to measure ourselves on the world stage. The defeat by Chile is a minor setback on our part and we aim to bridge the gap in our final game against Ghana,”

Kenya has edged Ghana in recent meets; a 1-1 draw in a friendly match in 2018 at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani (MISC) followed by an aggregate score of 1-0 in the third round of the CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament last October to eliminate the Mercy Tagoe Quarcoe led charges.

However, in 2016 during the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON), the Black Queens beat Kenya 3-1 in their debut tournament.

Starlets has won only one match, against Northern Ireland U19 whom they beat 2-0 in their opening fixture last Wednesday.
