Sadio Mane’s first half strike was enough as Senegal beat Uganda 1-0 in a round of 16 tie at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Aliou Cissé’s men endured a stern test through out the entire 90 minutes as Sadio Mane missed a penalty with Dennis Onyango keeping out the Liverpool forward.
Fans at the Cairo International Stadium were treated to an exciting start to the game with Mane opening the scoring in the 15th minute.
Mbaye Niang played in Sadio Mane who finished with a left-footed effort past Sundowns keeper Onyango.
A combination of errors in the Ugandan defense created a lot of space for the Senegalese to exploit and they benefited from that Mane goal.
The Cranes came close to the equalising goal on 23 minutes but his effort was saved by Senegal keeper Alfred Gomis.
Uganda conceded a penalty in the 58th minute, Dennis Onyango fouling Mane in the box. Mane stepped up but Onyango saved the spot kick.
A valiant effort from the Cranes of Uganda and Sebastian Desabre as they bowed out of Afcon 2019.
Senegal managed to maintain their one goal to set up a quarterfinal clash with Benin on Wednesday 10 July, 2019.
