Federation of Ugandan Football Association (FUFA) has called for resignation of president of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations’ President Sirelkhatim Mutasim Gafaar due to “governance challenge” at the organization.
In a letter to Nicholas Musonye, the CECAFA’s Secretary General, FUFA alleges that Mutasim, who was up to last week the president of the Sudan Football Association, “does not have time” for the regional football body.
“Our opinion as a member of CECAFA is that the president of CECAFA should resign his position having failed to conduct any business over two years,” FUFA letter, signed by the president Eng. Moses Magogo, reads in part.
CECAFA has not hosted the Senior Challenge Cup since Ethiopia’s 2015 edition which Uganda bagged.
Same goes to the clubs’ competition, Kagame Cup, which Tanzania hosted and was won by home side Azam FC.
This as other regional bodies like WAFU (for West Africa) and COSAFA (for Southern Africa) have sprung back to life and are regularly hosting their prime competitions.
FUFA wants CECAFA to stage comprehensive elections covering all positions including that of the president to help settle the body’s leadership inadequacies.
“This is therefore to kindly and officially ask the General Secretary to raise this matter for discussion at the next General Assembly.”
CECAFA’s last Executive Committee Meeting in Sudan passed new statutes and also chose Kenya to host this year’s Senior Challenge.
Rwanda was handed the rights to stage the women’s equivalence while Burundi will host the U17’s competition.
It remains to be seen if the tournaments will take place.
Kamal Shaddad, a two-time CAF Executive Committee Member, was last week re-elected SFA boss – ending Mutasim’s turbulent reign.
