The atmosphere in the Uganda Premier League is bubbling towards the boil. The battle at the top amongst leaders KCCA, second placed Vipers and surprised package JMC in third, is as stiff as it is in the fight to avoid the drop that includes SCVU, The Saints, Simba and Maroons at the bottom end.
Mike Mutebi’s KCCA invade Lweza at Wankulukuku with a strong belief of maintaining their precious 8-point lead over Vipers but will be without key players Muzamir Mutyaba, Ivan Ntege, Lawrence Kasadha, Benjamin Ochan, Hasan Wasswa Dazo, Ronald Kigongo and Ceaser Okhuti.
Lweza, who drew 1-1 with KCCA at Luzira in the first round, is a team that is not shy of upsetting the big guns, as the 2-1 win against Vipers recently can portray.
Mutebi is also wary of the vast experience at Joseph Mutyaba’s disposal that includes Paddy Muhumuza, Juma Balinya, Geoffrey Sserunkuma and Fred Kalanzi.
“The match is a potential banana skin if we get complacent. For the purists, this is one game they ought not to miss as Lweza’s experience meets KCCA’s passing football,” Mutebi told Daily Monitor.
Ten miles away in Matugga, defending champions Vipers, buoyed by the 2-0 win over Soana on Saturday, will be facing a Bright Stars side that will miss the services of the suspended Mathias Kigonya and head coach Fred Kajoba.
The mother of all battles will be at Kavumba where fifth placed Express visit Soana with an interesting prospect of Willy Kavuma and Ayub Kizza facing their former pay masters.
It will be exciting watching the battle of gunmen at Luzira between Maroons and Police but the former is deeply rooted on the bottom with no hopes of survival. The Saints, also flirting with relegation, play another sick man of the league, SCVU at Namboole.
