Uganda Cranes midfielder Tony Mawejje could miss out on a call up when the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers start in June.
Head Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic told AfricanFootball.com on Monday that the player could miss out because he has not been in serious football action for close to five months.
Mawejje has not been attached to any club since November last year after his Icelandic Premier League side, Valur Reykjavik did not contract him after a loan spell.
Last year Norwegian side Haugesund loaned the midfielder to Valur Reykjavik after he failed to impress the technical bench to feature regularly in the team.
“Mawejje having no Club and being out of competitive action for five months is a big blow for the national team ahead of the qualifiers and he will miss out if he fails to find a team,” added Sredojevic.
The Coach admitted that although Mawejje has been one of the pillars for the national team in recent years, he will not make the team if he fails to find a team because it would not be fair to other players who have been active.
The Cranes were grouped alongside 2013 Afcon finalists Burkina Faso, Botswana and Comoroes for the 2017 qualifiers. Uganda has never qualified for the African Football showpiece since 1978.
Uganda Cranes skipper Andrew Mwesigwa is another player who has not been attached to any team after his Kazakhstan Premier League side, FC Ordabasy did not renew his contract last December.
