The Sunday 26th Kenyan premier league fixtures saw defending Champions K’Ogalo go back to winning ways at Nyayo stadium dismissing hosts Ushuru FC 2-0. At the Thika Municipal stadium Jackson Macharia lone goal fired Thika United past strugglers City Stars.
Exuberant Gor bossed the early exchanges of the match with the lethal striker Michael Olunga rattling the crossbar from a powerful header 35 seconds into the game and just seven minutes later returning Godfrey Walusimbi ball across face of goal went begging.
The hosts strategy was evident, they enjoyed sitting back soaking in pressure from Gor hoping to hit them on the counter, this worked but not for long; in the 30th minute Michael Olunga capitalized on a poor back pass by Ushuru defender David Otieno to wonderfully put the ball past on coming Ushuru keeper Samuel Odhiambo for the opener.
Coach Kenyatta responded by pulling out dull Robert Omonuk who had earlier been booked for a more enterprising Evans Kiwanuka, the move saw Ushuru move forward more in search of the equalizer to no avail as the match headed into the breather with the visitors enjoying the slim lead.
K’Ogalo returned to the second half with the sole purpose of finishing off the game and in the 46th minute the experienced goal poacher Meddie Kagere picked his striking partner Olunga inside the box with a lovely back heel, the Geospatial engineering student without controlling returned the ball over his head to Kagere who headed it powerfully past Ushuru keeper for the second goal.
Ushuru’s striking combination of Allan Kateregga, Roosevelt Blaty and Evans Kiwanuka troubled Gor’s rear guard on several occasions but keeper Boniface Oluoch who had a good game stood stall, pulling wonderful saves to register another clean sheet in as many matches.
Gor Coach described the match as the best performance of the season for his side, “I’m very pleased with those three points it keeps us top of the league and another clean sheet. We enjoyed the game, we controlled the proceedings and I believe this is our best performance of the season.” The win cements Gor’s top position with 20 points from 8 matches.
Ushuru coach Ken Kenyatta blamed poor officiating for his side’s poor showing, “They scored clear goals but through our blunders. What has made me go so mad is the referee that they have fixed mind that they have to assist a team, every foul is being given to Gor Mahia and I am not so happy about it.”
Ushuru is now 10th in the KPL log with 12 points from 9 matches.
Thika United 1-0 City Stars
In the other match Jackson Macharia for the second time in two matches scored the all-important goal to maintain Thika United’s impressive run, the Tim Bryett side has collected maximum points in the last three matches and are currently second in the KPL log with 18 points from 9 matches one more than leaders Gor.
City Stars are still winless this season after 9 matches and are strong candidates for relegation if the trend continues; they are 13th in the log with 4 points.
