Harambee Stars and Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama has talked of his incredible football journey from the dusty pitches of Muthurwa to Europe in a latest film dubbed ‘The Lion of Muthurwa’.
In the video the former Celtic midfielder talks of his struggles at a tender age and the difficulties he had to go through to make it in football.
“I woke up every morning and would walk for about ten kilometers to play with other children. We used to play with our bare feet and in the process injured ourselves but I wanted to do anything to make it in life,” Wanyama said.

Wanyama narrates at how he used to walk with his dad to the cinema’s to watch his favorite players like Roy Keane and Patrick Viera to how he received a national team call up at a tender age of fifteen years.
“I accompanied my dad to the cinemas to watch my favorite players but sometimes sneaked in when I didn’t have the money. I won my first pair of boots when I was ten, they were heavy since I wasn’t used to playing in them but I had to adapt.. Five years later I got a call up to the national team and within a year I made it to Europe. I had stints in Belgian, Scotland and played in the Champions League,” Wanyama said.
The brother of Mc Donald Mariga said how he had sleepless night after scoring his first goal in the English Premier League (against Swansea) saying he had seen a lot during his footballing career and that he was ready to face any obstacle.
“That day I didn’t sleep. I went to bed at 4 am. I didn’t believe it. To be the first player from my country and score the first goal was incredible. I have faced a lot in my journey in football and I do not fear anything,” Wanyama said.
Wanyama is currently serving a five match game ban after receiving his third red card of the season in their 1-0 win over West Ham.
