On a day Maroons were officially relegated from the Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL), Simba boosted their own survival hopes with a 1-0 home win over leaders KCCA in Bombo yesterday.
More importantly, however, the result had huge ramifications in the title race as it helped Vipers close the gap on the leaders to six points following their own 4-0 thumping of struggling SCVU in Buikwe.
Vipers consequently moved to 45 points after 24 games but have two games in hand on KCCA, who they face on Friday at Lugogo.
Erisa Ssekisambu is the player leading Vipers’ charge and the striker netted a hat-trick yesterday to take his season tally to 15.
In Bombo, Alex Witaba’s strike was enough to condemn KCCA to defeat and move his side within two points of safety. The army side, who now have 25 points have, however, played two more games than Saints, the team outside the relegation places.
The latter were unlucky to fall to Vincent Kayizzi’s 83rd penalty after Yasin Mugume was adjudged to have handled in the box in their game against Express.
The result helped the third-placed Red Eagles keep their slim title hopes alive as they stay level on points with second-placed Vipers, who have played a game less.
Villa were also victors with Mike Serumaga’s brace and Umar Kasumba’s goal giving them a 3-1 win over Lweza.
