Hosts Sierra Leone set the ball rolling for the West Africa Football Association (WAFU) tournament on Tuesday with a barren draw against Cape Verde at the Bo Stadium.
At the same venue, Senegal edged Guinea 1-0 with an 18th minute strike courtesy of Ndeye Diakhate to hand Senegal the three points.
The results mean that Senegal top group A with Cape Verde second and Guinea third on alphabetical order.
Group B action starts on Wednesday with two matches on the cards.
Mali play Gambia as Liberia face Guinea Bissau.
