Zesco United and Harambee Stars midfield cog Anthony Akumu has stressed the importance of their Wednesday Champions League last group “A” fixture against Wydad Casablanca at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, despite having made it to maiden semi-final.
Akumu, well aware of the challenge the North Africans pose, is still confident of a good outing and a strong finish, going by the way they have prepared for the assignment.
“The match is very important just like the other games. We have prepared well and we hope come match day we will be able to give a good show,” The former Gor Mahia and Al Khartoum player told Soka25east.com.
“Even though we are already qualified for the semis, we want to finish in style God willing.” He added.
A win for Zesco against the 1992 champions who beat them 2-0 in Casablanca in the first leg, grant them leadership of the group, and a date with Zamalek SC of Egypt in the semis, while a draw or a lose pair them versus group “B” leaders and fellow Southern Africans Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
Akumu, whose partnership with Misheck Chaila has been rock solid in the middle of the pack, has acknowledged the fans effort in backing them to this end, and he’s calling on them not to relent.
“The fans have been supportive to us, and again we are asking them to continue believing in in us. We say thank you.” He concluded.
“Team ya Ziko” thumped league rivals Power Dynamos 4-0 in a local derby on Thursday 18, to give a perfect morale booster for the Wydad test, however, Head Coach George Lwandamina is still jittery of his shaky defense.
“Our defence has a tendency to fall asleep after we score and this allows opponents back into matches.” said Lwandamina.
The John Tosheck’s charges arrived in Ndola on Monday via Nairobi where the briefly camped over the weekend.
