Stephen Waruru was disappointed to have been accused of a rude gesture while celebrating his late equalizer on Sunday evening Kenya Premier League match in Kisumu.
The Ulinzi Stars forward insisted he just celebrated his second goal by removing his jersey in the 2-2 draw over Gor Mahia at Moi Stadium- and not by raising a middle-finger salute as claimed by Gor Mahia.
Fans attending the match caused violence and a stoppage of close to 20 minutes as Waruru celebrated his 88th minute equalizer.
“Those are blatant lies and people are just trying to justify acts of hooliganism. No one raised a finger to them. I just celebrated my goal by removing my jersey. Them turning it around and saying I made an abusive gesture is quite unfortunate,” said Waruru in an interview with Ulinzi Stars FC portal.
Gor Mahia earlier posted the statement below on their official facebook page that pointed on the player for misconduct.
“We would like to condemn the actions and behavior of Ulinzi Stars forward Stephen Waruru in today’s SportPesa Premier league match against Ulinzi Stars after equalising the second goal.
“It is uncouth and barbaric of one Waruru to provoke our fans by using his middle finger to insult our travelling fans. #Sirkal”
The army men came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Waruru scoring both goals in the last fifteen minutes of the match.
