Despite heading to the tie as favourites, Wydad Casablanca were stunned by Al Ahly as they lost their CAF Champions League Group A match 1-0 on Wednesday night at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat.

Ahly netted in the second stanza through Rami Rabia, which allowed the Red Devils an opportunity to move up the log standings.

John Toshack’s team still top the group ahead of ZESCO United thanks to a superior head-to-head record, but are now level on points with the Zambians after their 1-1 draw with ASEC Mimosas earlier in the day.

Although Casablanca were looking for a win to consolidate their top spot, they failed to penetrate their visitors’ defence.

It was 0-0 at the end of the opening half. However, with one minute into the second half, midfielder Rabia ensured the visitors were in the driving seat when he scored in the 46th minute.

Martin Jol’s men managed to desperately hold on to their lead as they walked away as winners to boost their confidence.

In the wake of the victory, Ahly now sit at number three with four points, which has revived their hopes of reaching the semifinals.

The eight time CAF Champions League winners will now want to continue with their winning ways to move up the log table when they face the in-form Zambian side on August 12.

ZESCO travel to Cairo and the hosts will be eyeing to avenge the 3-2 defeat they suffered in Zambia in June.

However, looking at Rouges et Blancs, they will also want to claim the full three points in their next game at home to Cote d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas.

In the first leg in June, Wydad claimed a win in Abidjan and that match will inspire them to erase the loss to Ahly.
