Ndola heavyweights and Zambian champions Zesco United extended the unbeaten run over rivals Nkana FC with a 5-3 thrashing in a Zambian Super League match played on Saturday, August 15.
The rout pushes Zesco’s point tally at the summit of the log to 46, as they stay on course to back to back titles.
The action packed thriller staged at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium lived up to it’s build up, with both sides starting the match on a high.
Nkana went ahead in the 6th minute from Simon Bwalya’s diving header, sending the Aba Reds fans into ecstasy, but their joy was cut short ten minutes later by Mwape Mwelwa’s equalizer.
Shimenga put the 12- time champions ahead again in the 23rd minute with a stinging low drive into the right corner of the net, before Winston Kalengo leveled for Zesco at the half hour mark.
Man of the match Clatus Chama put Zesco ahead for the first time in the match in the 35th minute with Justin Zulu adding the fourth at the stroke of half time.
Walter Bwalya reduced the deficit for Nkana to one goal minutes into the second half capitalizing on keeper’s error, but Jackson Mwanza restored the comfortable lead in the 60th minute with the fifth and the final score of the day.
Zesco defended better there after with Kenyan international David “Calabar” Owino standing tall at the back to keep Nkana’s dangerous forays in check.
Zesco remains unbeaten by Nkana FC since 2004.
