Zambia’s Football Legends: Andrew Sinkala, The German Machine

Zambia’s Football Legends: Andrew Sinkala, The German Machine

Hard tackling is what best describes Zambia’s only player to have signed for the German giants Bayern Munich. This is no other than Andrew Sinkala.

Andrew Sinkala a defensive midfielder who featured for the Zambia National team at junior and senior level was born on 18 June 1979 in Chingola. Andrew is the elder brother to Chipolopolo midfielder Nathan Sinkala.

He started out his football career at Nchanga Rangers in 1998 and a year later in 1999, Sinkala joined German giants Bayer Munich in a record fee paid to a Zambian club. In his stint at Bayern, Sinkala won the Bundesliga title and DFB Pokal in the 1999/2000 season.

Sinkala was at Bayern Munich for 2 years

Sinkala captained the Zambia Under-20 side at the 1999 World Youth Championships in Nigeria. In the same year 1999, He made his debut for the Senior National team against the Democratic Republic of Congo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Things did not work out for Andrew at Bayern Munich in his two year stint at the club where he made 40 appearnces for the B side and only 1 game for the main side scoring 7 goals. In the year 2001 he signed for FC. Koln another German club and in his five years at the club, Sinkala made 80 appearances scoring a meagre 4 goals.

One noteable thing for Sinkala is that during his stint at Bayern and FC. Koln he had represented the Chipolopolo at the Africa Cup on Nations three times in 2000, 2002 and 2006.

In 2006, Sinkala left FC. Koln and joined SC Paderborn and played at the club for two seasons before switching sides to sign with Augsburg in 2008.
