Zesco United CEO Justin Mumba has warned the team not to forget that the clubs’ major aim  is to maintain its status as a championship winner.

The Ndola club is gunning to reclaim the FAZ Super Division title it lost to Zanaco last season and also retain the Barclays Cup they won after beating the latter in the final last November for a record fifth time.

Zesco have also won all five of their league titles following their return to top flight in 2004 making them one of the most successful and consistent teams in Zambia over the last decade.

Club Chairman Justin Mumba told the players on January 21 in Ndola that Zesco had a reputation to maintain as a big club and no one should slacken.

“At Zesco United we not a team that are mere competitors,” Mumba said.

“They are teams in this country that can finish number 8 or number 12 or survive relegation and finished 5th from bottom and nobody cares because they don’t have any desire to win the league But if you playing for Zanaco, they will tell you they want to win the league, and they will fight to win the league. It is the same with Zesco.”- Munba added
Mumba also warned the newcomers that expectations were high especially from those players promoted from Zesco’s development teams Malaiti Rangers and Zesco Vic Falls FC.

“Those of you who have just joined Zesco it is a pressure team..that is we would want you to win trophies,” Mumba said.

“It is not like Malaiti Rangers or Vic Falls because they are developmental teams for Zesco United that will always stay in Division 1. You have come to a team that challenges for titles. For those who have been promoted from these teams, the coaches have surely seen your potential, you are not merely participants but you are here to challenge for positions so that you can be the best amongst the best.”- Mumba added

Mumba also reminded the players, coaches, support staff and secretariat personnel that they all had image to protect as Zesco United both inside and outside the clubs doors.
“The success of this club will always be attributed to discipline we have to name to keep as a club.So whatever you do, you must realise it has an impact on the club,” Mumba said.
