Zesco United on Wednesday (26 September 2018) won their seventh Zambian Super Division title after retaining the title won last year.
The Ndola-based side recorded a 4-0 home win over two-time champions Nchanga Rangers at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium to complete a successful defence of the league crown with two games to spare. The Electricity lads have an unassailable 80 points from 36 matches.
All four goals came in the opening 45 minutes with midfielder Mwape Mwelwa breaking the deadlock in the fourth minute before defender Solomon Sakala doubled the lead three minutes later.
Kenyan-import Jesse Were converted a tenth minute penalty to take his tally to 18 goals tied with Idris Mbombo of Nkana and Green Eagles’ Tapson Kaseba.
Defender Marcel Kalonda completed the rout at the stroke of half time in a result that also sent Nchanga to the second-tier for the second time in their history since 2008.
Zesco have garnered all their seven league titles since they returned to the top-flight in 2004. It is also the third under the aegis of ‘Chicken’ George Lwandamina who led them to similar triumphs in 2014 and 2015.
They are now tied on seven titles with Zanaco but are two shy of Mufulira Wanderers, whilst Nkana, Zambia’s most successful club, has 12 titles to their name.
“We are excited about this win but we won’t celebrate until the last game of the season,” Zesco Assistant Coach Alfred Lupiya said in a post-match interview.
“We need to win the remaining games then we will celebrate.”
Zesco will represent Zambia in next season Total CAF Champions League, to be joined by second place Nkana.
Third placed Eagles and Green Buffaloes, tied fourth on 68 points will play in the Total CAF Confederation Cup.
Eagles, from the provincial farming town of Choma, will be making their continental debut , eight years after making their first appearance in the elite division.
