Qualifies to Group stage
Zesco United knocked out Kaizer Chiefs out of the Caf Confederation Cup on Saturday night as they beat the South African outfit 2-1 in a second leg match at the FNB Stadium.
Chiefs went into the match in need of two goals to level matters, and advance on away goal rule having gone down 3-1 to Zesco in Ndola, Zambia last weekend.
However, the Amakhosi’s dream changed from hope to a nightmare when Akumu, scored the opener 10 minutes into the game and Jesse Were scoring his second goal against them in two matches.
Chiefs tried to take the game to the visitors, whose defence lay quite deep.
However, it was not Chiefs’ night, with Leonardo Castro, in particular, unable to convert a few chances in the first period.
George Lwandamina instructed his boys to play with cautious at the back and avoided too many passes which worked well for the visitors.
As hard as Chiefs tried to get back into the game, they eventually found themselves punished further when Were scored the second of the game in the 69th minute.
Chiefs midfielder Khama Billiat, who scored the SA club’s goal in the first leg, managed to find the back of the Zesco net deep into injury time in the second half but it was too late for a come back .
By then, the damage had been done, and Zesco’s name will be in the hat for the next round of Confederation Cup action, with the draw set to be made on Monday.
This is a big achievement for Zesco United who have been eliminated twice now in the last three seasons by South African clubs and will match on to the Group stages with a lot of confidence .
The draws for the CAF Confederation Cup are on Monday 21st January 2019.
The Zambian dream continues Sunday in Ivory Coast as Nkana take on FC San Pedro leading 3-0 from the first leg.
