Zimbabwe FA President Dr. Philip Chiyangwa will vie for Chinhoyi town parliamentary seat on ruling ZANU-PF party ticket in next year’s general elections.
Speaking to Soka25east from Harare, the flamboyant business mogul who is also the president of COSAFA said he is looking forward to serving the great people of Chinhoyi as their MP again.
“It’s true I want to have another dance, I was once their MP,” the influential football administrator said.
Philip, famously known as the King of Selfies by his youthful admirers, has vowed to wrestle the seat from opposition MDC party which bagged the seat in 2013 election.
Chinhoyi town constituency is found in Mashonaland west province a ZANU-PF stronghold.
If successful, the CAF’s African Cup of Nations Committee deputy president will not be the first football administrator who holds a political office.
CAF honcho Ahmad, who Philip helped ascend to the top football seat in Africa, doubled up as Madagascar FA boss and the country’s Senate deputy president.
Ahmed also served as Secretary of State for Sports and Minister of Fisheries.
In Kenya late Football Kenya Federation President Joab Omino was a Member of Parliament for Kisumu town constituency.
It was during Omino’s time that the Harambee Stars qualified for three straight AFCON in 1988, 1990 and 1992.
In Asia, Qatar Football Association head Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a member of the ruling royal family.
Chiyangwa’s influence has continued to expand both locally and in Africa.
Apart from being a prominent member of the ruling ZANU-PF, he was heavily credited with the ouster of the long serving former CAF president Issa Hayatou in March this year.
