Zimbabwe won against Guinea 2-1 on Tuesday evening at the Ahmadou Ahidjou Stadium in Yaoundé to restore some pride after two defeats in their opening matches.
It was a historic meeting between the Warriors and the Syli National, since it was led by the Rwandan referee Salima Mukansanga who became the first female referee to officiate during a TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations match.
Norman Mapeza’s boys started the match with a positive attitude in the match with the intention of achieving a positive result.
The Warriors were rewarded for their efforts with a goal, Knowledge Musona headed in a corner from Never Tigere to open the scoring.
The Warriors managed to double the lead with a goal coming from Mahachi just 2 minutes before halftime.
On the restart, Sily National reduced the deficit through their captain Naby Keita who scored with a left footed effort.
Zimbabwe held on to a famous victory that saved some honor. Despite the loss, Guinea qualified to the Round of 16 in second place with 4 points along side Senegal on 5 points who drew with Malawi in Bafoussam.
