The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee (Exco) has recommended disciplinary proceedings against Dr. Philip Chiyangwa, the Zimbabwe FA president, for dishonoring the continental football body.
The resolution, among others, was passed during yesterday’s Exco meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where the 39th Ordinary General Assembly of CAF is taking place.
“Mr. Philip Chiyangwa has multiplied actions and statements recently that appear to attack the honor of the CAF, its president and the members of the Executive Committee,” the resolution reads partly.
Chiyangwa, who is also the president of COSAFA, the Southern African zonal football body has been at loggerheads with CAF since hosting a group of FA presidents and the FIFA boss Gianni Infantino in Harare on February 14th 2017 against the wishes of the Issa Hayatou’s led outfit.
CAF had advised that bringing together FA heads outside COSAFA without their express authority would amount to attempt to “destabilize” it but, the flamboyant businessman was adamant attempts to stop him would amount to violation of his fundamental freedoms of association.
He further asked for an apology from CAF and subsequently threatened legal action against the CAF’s Secretary General Hicham Amrani for the “inconvenience” caused by the “misapprehension” of his “noble intentions.”
Chiyangwa has been in the forefront campaigning for Hayatou’s challenger in the race for CAF president, Malagasy Football Federation (MFF) president, Ahmand Ahmand in tomorrow’s elections.
