Zimbabwe PSL Champions Chicken Inn withdraw from CAF Champions League citing financial constraint as runners up Dynamos decline to fill shoes

Zimbabwe will for a second successive year be without a representative in the Caf Champions League after PSL champions Chicken Inn stated that they will not take part in the competition.

After winning their maiden PSL title, Chicken Inn cited financial constraints in their decision not to participate in Africa’s elite club competition.

Runner-up Dynamos also declined to fill in Chicken Inn’s shoes for the same reasons.

The Harare giants also pulled out of this year’s competition after winning the league title last season.

This leaves Harare City as the only team likely to take part in Caf inter-club competitions after winning the Chibuku Super Cup which handed them a Confederations Cup ticket.

Chicken Inn chairman Lifa Ncube confirmed that they are unable to play in the Champions League.

“It is sad that we will not be playing in the Champions League. It is something beyond our capacity. We will issue a statement today (Monday),” Ncube said.

Dynamos secretary Webster Chikengezha said they are not in a position to replace Chicken Inn.

“We had never planned about the Champions League after Chicken Inn won the league so it is a matter of inconvenience for us. It is something out of question for us. Had we been champions we could have had somewhere to start from. If we had won, we could have participated,” Chikengezha said.

Harare City would be under scrutiny in the Confederations Cup next year as Zimbabwe’s sole representative in Africa.
